KANPUR: Around 7,000 candidates from Lucknow, Allahabad, Meerut, Jhansi and Kanpur, who had recently qualified National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET)-2016,reached Ganesh Shankar Vidhyarthi Memorial (GSVM) Medical College to participate in ongoing counselling-cum-registration process on Tuesday.

Although most of the seats in open and OBC categories in all the 14 government medical colleges had already been locked on the first two days of the counselling, the rush of candidates on the third day was due to the chance of getting a private medical college seat at the cost of a government college fee. A decision of subsidizing half the seats of all 21 private medical colleges of Uttar Pradesh was taken by the state government a few days ago, following which a large number of candidates reached GSVM Medical College to lock their seats on Tuesday.

The students from rank 3001 to 10,000 had been called to participate in the registration process. Also 288 candidates, who had already gone through registration process on Monday, finally locked their seats for government medical colleges on Tuesday. As per records of (UPNEET) website, out of 1,544 seats of 14 government medical colleges, all open seats in both general and OBC categories have already been locked. Around 560 seats left to be locked are from reserved categories like SC, ST, physically handicapped and single girl child.

During the counselling process on Tuesday, candidates went through tough time as the process of registration took hours. The lecture hall complex was insufficient for the large number of candidates. The registration process continued in the evening.

There was no biometric identification process and verification of documents was done manually, which took too much time. The improper arrangements tested the patience of the candidates and even their parents accompanying them.

There was one tent to accommodate a large number of people. The hot weather during the afternoon further worsened the scenario. Candidates and their parents were witnessed sitting in the open ground and the staircases of the counselling building.

The tired students were witnessed sitting on floors of the counselling rooms. They stood in rows to register themselves.

A team of medical college staff kept announcing the rank of the students, thereby asking them to come forward to register themselves. The parents and gurdians also had arguments with the college authorities.
