NEET is a common entrance test for admissions in all medical and dental colleges across the country. The second phase is scheduled for July 24, as mandated by the Supreme Court.

The SC order implies that all government colleges, deemed universities and private medical colleges will be covered under NEET.

STATING THAT most states and the students are not ready yet, and that language remains an issue to be settled, almost all political parties and states have sought postponement of the second phase of National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) until next year.

Their observations came to the fore on Monday during an all-party meeting convened by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, and Health Minister J P Nadda’s meeting with health ministers and representatives of 18 states and union territories.

NEET is a common entrance test for admissions in all medical and dental colleges across the country. The second phase is scheduled for July 24, as mandated by the Supreme Court.

Senior officials said an ordinance to bypass the court mandate and bring relief to students this year is one of the options before the government, although no decision has been taken yet.

Following a demand by several states, the Union Health Ministry had urged the apex court to allow students to take NEET in six vernacular languages as well. The court has not issued any direction on that.

After the meeting, Nadda said subsequent action would be thought of “soon” as the Centre stands committed to bring in transparency in medical education system and remove alleged malpractices. “In principle, most states are in favour of NEET,” Nadda said, “but some of them pointed out logistics issues that are impeding its implementation. These states have thus sought more time. Today we discussed language, syllabus and state governments’ concerns over state medical entrance examinations. We will need more discussions with state governments on this issue. We have to solve all problems of the states before NEET is conducted across the country.”

Nadda said his ministry would apprise the Supreme Court of the state governments’ apprehensions on NEET after arriving at a conclusion. At the meeting, Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain supported the court’s order and requested the Centre to implement it at the earliest to bring in reform.
