Kanpur boys Amit and Prashant Kumar cracked the JEE Advanced exam this year, securing a rank of AIR 371 in the SC/ST category and AIR 1762 respectively. However, money has become a problem for them to take admission into the prestigious institutes.
'They are determined but money is a problem for them'
Read the story of Amit:
Holding back her tears Amit's mother Girija Devi explained how it was quite impossible for a family of five to pay her son's fees with the meagre salary of Rs 8,000 earned by her husband.
"My father works for over 10-12 hours each day and goes to a factory in Dada Nagar industrial estate on a bicycle. But his earnings are not sufficient to get me admission to IIT," said Amit, adding that his school exempted his fees and that is how he managed to study till class 12. Amit had scored 89 per cent marks in the intermediate examination.
"I am ready to work hard to first finish my preparatory course and then enter the first year of BTech. I scored 35 marks in JEE Advanced and the cut-off for my category was 38. Therefore, I will have to go through preparatory course," he said.
Read the story of Prashant:
Son of a tannery employee, Prashant secured AIR 1762 in the JEE Advanced exam this year. It is quite tough for his father who hardly earns Rs 7,000 a month to arrange college fees for him and he said that he will not study if his father fails to arrange fees for his IIT admission.
"I want to study mechanical engineering from IIT-Kharagpur. This IIT has the highest number of seats and if we are able to arrange for fees, I will take admission there," Prashant told us.
