JEE 2016 topper’s tips: Practice maths every day.
JEE 2017 topper’s tips: Practice maths every day. (source: Facebook/Aman Jain)
When Aman Jain stepped out of the exam centre in May last year, he did not expect that he would land the 32nd rank in the Joint Entrance Examinations (JEE advanced) 2016. He did not even believe that he would get a seat at one of the most prestigious engineering institutes in the country.
Today, Jain has settled comfortably at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay and is pursuing his dream course — B Tech in Computer Science. Here’s what the boy, whose scores shot as high as 300 in JEE mains and 258 in JEE advanced, has to say about all that he has experienced:
How did you prepare for the JEE Mains?
I used to go to coaching classes three days a week. They helped me cover the syllabus before we moved on to practicing with mock tests. I also maintained a diary in which I jotted down notes on every chapter that they taught and later, all the mistakes I made and the concepts I needed to remember.
In the remaining four days of the week, I went through everything that I learnt at school and at the coaching centre and did self-study.
What did you do during the last few months before JEE?
By the last three months, I had already covered the mains syllabus through my coaching centre. So I focussed on practice papers.
Before board exams, I did not even touch my text books. I relied on the notes that I made all these months. That is the only thing I trusted until the last few days before JEE mains and even for the advanced paper.
What did you in the last two or three days before the paper?
During that time, I did not even go through my notes. Since I gave so many mock tests, I was confident. Therefore, I spent time with my family, which I did not get to do much while I was preparing. This helped me clear my mind and keep me calm on the day of the exam.
What about JEE did you find difficult?
I’ve always found maths a little tricky compared to the other subjects. Chemistry is easily covered if you memorise organic chemistry and physics is a logical subject. Maths, however, is not easy because they tend to mix and match the concepts and unless you know those concepts by your fingertips, you will get confused and make mistakes.
The difference between doing brilliantly and failing miserably in JEE all depends on those silly mistakes that most aspirants make. I used to spend at least an hour a day practicing maths to avoid this.
How did you manage your time between school, coaching and self-studies?
When I was not at school or at the coaching centre, I had enough time for self-study. Moreover, the NCERT syllabus at school covered most of what we had to study for JEE. This took away any time I could get to watch movies or just relax, but the hard work was worth it because here, at IIT-Bombay, we have ample time to pursue the activities that we wish and take part in as many extra-curricular activities as we please.
How different is life at IIT-B?
This is the first time I am living away from home and it feels a little strange to be independent at such an early age. We have to decide when and how to study. Even though what we’ve been taught so far is loosely based on what we’ve already learnt through school and while preparing for JEE, the concepts are quite advanced.
The college does make sure that we get all the resources that we need and it has some of the best infrastructure. We can use any equipment that we need to work on our assignments and projects.
What advice would you give to JEE aspirants?
Don’t practice too much for a single chapter. I’ve seen some of my friends trying to go through four or five books for the same chapter. Then, they lost interest for the minor chapters. Don’t do that.
You need to give equal time to every chapter regardless of whether it is small or big. Narrowing down the number of questions that you believe will come in the exam will also work out if you know the concepts.
If you find a chapter difficult, you can dedicate more time to practice it. But do not go through too many references as it will confuse you. I only went through one book for each subject and that helped me a lot.

Students-Preparing-for-JEE Main

Students preparing for JEE Main should primarily stick to NCERT course books and head towards reference books only upon its completion. (Getty Images/iStockphoto)

While sawing a log of wood, being equipped with a razor sharp blade is not an absolute guarantee for success. Here, it is essential to implement the right method and technique. Making mistakes, in this context, will not only result in a delayed job but also poor finishing. More importantly, it can consequently also blunt the blade, even break it. Sawing has a strange resemblance to cracking a competitive exam. In order to put your best self forward, you need to implement the right technique. Opting wrong methods during preparation will, on one hand, dampen your progress. On the other, it will accumulate stress and affect your overall performance considerably. Below are the most common mistakes that students must avoid during JEE Main preparations :
Ignoring the basics:
Students often make their preparations synonymous to studying with an exhaustive combination of reference books and study material. In reality, more than 70% of the questions are either from the NCERT or are an extended version of its learnings. Students should primarily stick to NCERT course books and head towards reference books only upon its completion. Also, Class XI syllabus constitutes a substantial portion of the JEE exam. Ensure that you revise its topics simultaneously along with your Class XII syllabus. If an examination is fast-approaching, identify the recurring Class XI questions from previous year’s question papers and specifically revise those topics.
Avoiding conceptual understanding:
It has been observed that students prefer method-based approach rather than applying a conceptual understanding over the questions. Initially, this approach might serve the purpose, but it can become quite detrimental for students because many a times, despite being framed on similar lines, a slightly off-patterned question becomes difficult to understand. Thus, it is always imperative to apply concepts in each and every topic that you practice.
Falling into traps:
When students practice similar questions too often, they develop a tendency to identify and solve them as per their self-interpretation. MCQ questions are often framed in a deceptive manner. Ensure that you read and understand the questions properly before attempting them. As they are also supplemented with incorrect answers, failing to do so will result in negative marking for a question that you could have easily solved.
Also, avoid silly mistakes. After performing well in mock drills and practice papers, students, to a certain degree, become overconfident. This lead to careless mistakes and wasting of a substantial amount of time in rechecking calculations. Do not lose your focus while solving a question in the first place. This will help you ensure that the solution has been corrected at each and every step. Additionally, during an examination, students tend to avoid long questions in fear of losing crucial time. Contrary to this popular belief, the long text questions are often easier to solve. So, do not ignore or give them a miss.
Giving up hobbies:
In an attempt to give their complete attention towards the exam, students end up quitting their hobbies and indulging in daily activities. Doing so, can reduce the enthusiasm, stress up the brain, and decrease efficiency, thereby resulting in a lacklustre performance. Prevent making your preparations cumbersome. You’ll be able to grasp and retain more information by maintaining a stress-free mind. Moreover, engaging yourself in physical activities will enable you to keep up a healthy lifestyle, which is very crucial during preparations. Students must try and enrol themselves in performance-enhancing activities such as yoga, meditation, or anything else that suits them better.
Doubting oneself:
This possibly is the biggest blunder that students make during the preparation. Giving room to doubts directly increases hesitation and leads to lack of confidence. Trust yourself and your abilities. Develop a positive mind-set. To do so, implement a goal-oriented strategy. For students that are not able to deal with this problem must set long-term goals initially. However, this activity should not be done during the last 15 days before the examination.
The Final Countdown:
Students putting a lot of efforts during their early preparations are often seen slacking as the examination approaches. This pattern is more dominant in self-studying students that have no mentor. As a result, their performances drop severely. This also increases conceptual doubts later and makes time management exceedingly difficult during the final week. Completing syllabus before time is not an assurance of success. Students must constantly practice in order to increase retention and enhance their skill set in terms of speed and calculation.

Kozhikode: The announcement by the CBSE fixing upper age limit of 25 years for candidates appearing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) has been termed grossly unfair and denial of opportunity by many medical aspirants.

They said that it would shatter the dreams of many who wish to pursue MBBS after completing other professional courses like BAMS, BHMS and BDS.

Also, the decision is likely to affect the prospects of many candidates in the 'special category reservations' like the seats reserved for agricultural assistants for BSc Agriculture course and MBBS and BHMS seats reserved for nurses employed in government service.

For instance, there are seven seats reserved for ayurveda degree/diploma holders for MBBS course in the state along with four seats for homoeopathy degree holders

Authorities of the Commissionarate of Entrance Examinations (CEE) has written to the state health department pointing out the technical difficulties and issues involved in the wake of the CBSE announcement.

Medical aspirants cry foul over age cap set for NEET

"There are many who are passionate about pursuing a career in medicine. I have been preparing for the MBBS entrance for the last several months after completing the BDS course and even after securing a government job. The latest decision has dealt a severe blow to the plans," Dr Suresh T said.

"The fixing of upper age limit will lead to denial of opportunity for many of us. While the prospectus of KEAM- 2017, issued by the state commissioner of entrance examinations (CEE), specifically states that there is no upper age limit for KEAM 2017, candidates who have crossed 25 cannot apply for NEET. Admission to medical, agriculture, forestry, veterinary and fisheries courses in the state are carried out from the NEET rank list," a medical aspirant who wished not to be named said.

Meanwhile, additional chief secretary in the health and family welfare department, Rajeev Sadanandan, said that the department has not taken a decision on taking up the matter with the central government.

"We have been getting representations from many sides to take up the matter with the Union government. It is a policy decision taken on the basis of recommendation of a national level technical expert group. It has got its ramifications and is likely to affect candidates coming from a rural background," he said.

Aspiring doctors will get three chances to clear the National Eligibility-Cum-Entrance Test (NEET), the CBSE said on Friday, raising hopes of thousands of candidates who had failed in three earlier attempts and were ineligible to take the test again.
The Medical Council of India (MCI) – which governs medical education in India – held out more hope, saying it had not decided on the number of attempts candidates could take, hinting it could give more chances.
Earlier rules of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which conducts the exams, had held candidates ineligible to take NEET this year if they had failed thrice in the entrance exams – NEET 2016 or the now-discontinued All India Pre-Medical Test.

NEET was launched last year after the Supreme Court threw out a clutch of petitions challenging the single, all-India test for entry to medical and dental colleges.
In a statement late in the evening, the health ministry said NEET-2017 shall be counted as the first attempt, irrespective of the previous attempts in AIPMT/NEET.
An estimated 10 lakh students are likely to take the test on May 7. The online application system has been updated to allow previously barred students to fill their application, the CBSE said.
“Issue of number of attempts in NEET sorted out. Clarification received from MoHFW/MCI that NEET 2017 will be treated as first attempt and two more will be given. CBSE is updating this on website (sic),” HRD minister Prakash Javadekar tweeted.
The board notification will come as a relief for thousands of students who were protesting the earlier directive barring them from taking NEET 2017.
“The matter relating to approval of recommendations of the (MCI) executive committee limiting the number of NEET attempts is yet to be placed before the general body of the council,” said Reena Nayyar, MCI secretary.
